Last Sunday, we battled out our hangovers and zombied over to the Brooklyn Designs show in Dumbo. Lured in by the clever vintage suitcases that housed his jewelry, Kiel Mead’s designs made us giddy!
The first thing we noticed were the clever little metal bowtie rings cast from a little piece of tied string, cute as an everyday pinky ring or as the occasional reminder “string around your finger!” Then he showed us his crucifix door knocker- how worship worthy!- and we were sprung.
Kiel Mead started designing jewelry in 2003 while still in school at Pratt Institute, studying industrial design. Though his first love was, and still is, furniture design, he found that designing jewelry was an easy way to do something with all the ideas he had. After doing a few pieces he discovered a love for it, but for Kiel it doesn’t stop there. “I want to do everything. I want to create a lifestyle. From the furniture you live with, to the jewelry you wear, to the products you have in your home. I want to touch on all things and reinvent how we use, look at, and hold everything.”
What sets the designer’s creations apart from most is that all of his projects tend to be conceptual in nature with an idea behind everything. Such inspirations developed in the past touch on nostalgic, historical, iconic, even biblical themes. Currently Mead has a few of his pieces in an exhibit entitled “Cleanliness is Next to Godliness”- clean design meets Catholicism in the modern world.
Available at The Future Perfect, MoMa Design Store, and Odin.
“Cleanliness is Next to Godliness” exhibit is at The Future Perfect til June. 115 N. 6th Street at Berry.
