On Tuesday the Worship Worthy team escaped the office for a field trip to Greenpoint and were welcomed into the industrial live/work space of women’s apparel designer Mary Meyer.
A California transplant, Mary majored in painting at the California College of the Arts, exploring areas such as textiles and printmaking, which helped her to discover her talent for clothing design. While working as a hostess at a Bay Area restaurant, Mary wore her own creations to work and diners showed an overwhelming response. In 2005 Mary started her company, Mary Meyer Clothing, and relocated to Brooklyn to design and produce it. Made sweatshop-free in areas across the borough, Mary’s creations are based on comfortable necessities that she embellishes by hand-dying her fabrics and adding prints and custom details.
Mary opens her studio to friends and fans in the mood for dress-up parties, inviting them to rummage through boxes of clothes (conveniently organized by size), while sipping wine and adoring her kitty Sissy. Our Saint Agnes picked up an over-sized black tunic with a tribal-esque gold zigzag print while Eve picked up a sexy but simple turtleneck dress and Sister Sarah scored on a non-pilling oversized sweater. She had just finished tie dying some long dresses still drying on the rack so unfortunately we didn’t get the pleasure of trying those on.
Available at Oak, The Mini Mini Market, and TG170.
