Samples on View

watercolor.jpg

Whether used as a designer’s records, quality control, marketing tools, forecasting, or color standardization, sample books are prized tools that help spread the powerful message of design.

“Multiple Choice: From Sample to Product” examines sampling formats from the collections of Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and Smithsonian Institution Libraries, which illustrate a vast selection of available design options and make the connection between samples and final products.

The sample book and other formats that contain examples of a product and technique in available colors are uniquely tangible tools which link together design, technology, and marketing. They have been used for more than 300 years for the merchandizing and recording of design alternatives in many areas of the decorative arts, including wallcoverings, ceramics, and textiles.

Multipurpose, and often with an accidental beauty, sampling formats provide a detailed view into the manufacturing processes, technological innovations, design tastes, styles, and color sensibilities of other eras. Usually in pristine condition, protected in a book or other enclosure, the information contained in samples has been uncompromised by time. As highly prized sample books traveled with their creators, they spread technology and artistic ingenuity across regions and countries and helped raise the visibility of design via portable, visual, and tactile samples.

“Multiple Choice: From Sample to Product” is on view now until April 6, 2008 at the Cooper Hewitt Nation Design Museum.

Ripe for the Pickin’

ripe.jpg
There’s a ripe new collection of jewelry that’s making quite a statement in its mission to empower women.

Folasade Ologundudu, owner and designer of Ripe Jewelry NYC worked as an intern at various companies in her early years before finding her niche in jewelry design. She interned at The International Center of Photography for 2 years and jewelry company Bijules before unveiling her first collection at The Golden Hanger pop-up shop on the Lower East Side in 2007.

Simplistic while remaining complex in design and harmonious to the eye, Ripe Jewelry offers a full collection of sterling silver and 14k gold plated pendants and earrings. Each piece finds inspirations in the female figure, molded into silhouettes of women in sexy, provocative, or coy poses.

“I wanted to bring a little bit of shock power while also conveying the message to women to own your sexuality. A lot of women are empowered while others feel they can’t own it, I want to let women feel empowered.”

Fans of Ripe NYC jewelry already include Kid Cudi (Fool’s Gold) and it will be featured in the next Mickey Factz ft. the Cool Kids “Rockin’ and Rollin’” video. Be on the look out!

Ripe Jewelry NYC is available directly through the designer. Click here to send her an email.

Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far

sagmeisterdeitch.jpg

Deitch presents “Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far” an exhibition of the highly anticipated personal diary of graphic designer, Stefan Sagmeister.

Stefan Sagmeister is one of today’s most innovative and influential graphic designers. His
conception and application of graphic design goes above and beyond traditional notions of the
practice, taking it to the realm of performative and conceptual art, painting and sculpture.
Sagmeister is most widely known for his album cover artwork for bands like The Rolling Stones, Talking Heads and Lou Reed, and for books, like Mariko Mori’s Wave UFO for the Kunsthaus Bregenz, which function as sculptural objects.

Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far, an interactive exhibition by Stefan Sagmeister, opens at Deitch Projects on January 31, 2008. The exhibition will include works that have a life of their own, transforming throughout the exhibition as viewers engage with them. Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far is timed to coincide with the release of a new book of the same title, which surveys Sagmeister’s illustrious career.

Stefan Sagmeister has his own design firm in New York, Sagmeister Inc. In 2005, he won a Grammy Award in the “Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package” category for art directing Talking Heads’ Once in a Lifetime box set. Sagmeister has been recognized in national publications such as The New York Times, Rolling Stone and Wired.

Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far. Book Release Party, January 31st, 6-9pm. At Deitch Gallery. 76 GRAND STREET. Exhibition runs January 31 - February 23, 2008.

Cavern’s Canvas

cavern2.jpg

Dynamic through its graphic and silhouette combinations, Cavern focuses primarily on hand-drawn art and for 2008 has expanded their collection to include a wide range of apparel.

Cavern is the ongoing collaboration of ideas between Los Angeles based artists, Adam Tullie and Angeline Rivas. The line was born in 2005, some time after Tullie ditched art school to travel throughout Europe and make music. Through his exploration of organic form and meticulous line work his art has become suitable for textiles, working in a “painterly nature with contrasting linear formation.” Tullie’s partner, Otis fashion design major, Angeline Rivas’ intensely detailed drawings are rendered with fine pen strokes creating a highly stylized representation of various subjects. The majority of drawing included in the collection is executed in ballpoint pen, and several works have taken up to one month to complete.

Without being swayed by market trends, Cavern strives to successfully engage classic charm with an innovative twist of visual information using materials of the highest quality available.

If you’re a Beck fan you might have already seen some of Tullie’s work included in his latest album insert, The Information, or on shirt designs for a 2007 Japanese Tour. The Cavern duo recently completed a collaboration project with Devendra Banhart on items that are currently being sold on his world tour. Kanye West is also a fan of the hand drawn graphics.

Cavern is available at Odin and Oak in New York, Fred Segal Man and Kin in Los Angeles, TNT and Reborn in Canada, & Beams and Ships in Japan. If you’re attending next week’s Capsule show, make sure to stop by their booth.
