Out of Mind

Sip on Petron while Shawn Mortensen signs you a copy of his latest book, a perfect gift for anybody!
Over the last fifteen years, Shawn Mortensen has photographed cutting-edge culture-makers while also revealing the gritty reality of urban street life and the world’s political climate. Truly with his finger on the pulse, Mortensen took photographs of the in crowd before they were the in crowd. His subjects range from celebrities such as Gwen Stefani, Marcello Mastroianni, and Tupac Shakur to contemporary artists like Raymond Pettibon, Brice Marden, and Francesco Clemente. Yet these portraits are juxtaposed with haunting photo essays on the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, Mexico; the ghettoes of Jamaica; and the landscape of Mongolia—often with startling results.
Shawn Mortensen, a Los Angeles–based photographer (also an MTV video award–nominated music video director and an actor) has been a regular contributor to i-D Magazine and has also shot popular covers for Spin and Vibe. Mortenson is celebrating is 2nd book of images and the 14th year of the Zapatista uprising.

Extreme Embroidery

Sonya Clark’s Afro Abe II, 2007. Hand-embroidered, French knotted thread on five dollar bill.
The Museum of Arts & Design’s “Pricked: Extreme Embroidery” exhibit puts an alternative spin on the traditional craft of embroidery, revolutionizing perceptions of needlework.
A centuries-old handcraft, embroidery finds its reinvention here, blurring genres and eras. Artists reflect on the world today, their works conveying powerful and personal content ranging from subjective dreams and diaries to controversial politics. In these provocative, satirical, and humorous displays, thread fuses with a variety traditional and unexpected mediums including stone, paper, human hair, and cosmetic skin peels.
High caliber embroidery artists Maira Kalman and Elaine Reichek are shown alongside works by emerging artists such as Andrea Deszö of Transylvania, who records aphorisms and warnings received from her Transylvania mother in a series titled “Lessons from My Mother.”
Structuring the exhibit are themes: “Neither More Nor Less” combining language with the images; “Politics is Not a Science” analyzes policies and racial rhetoric while other themes represent pop culture references, human consciousness and memory.
Currently on view, the exhibit compiles 60 works featuring embroidery from 48 artists from 17
countries. “Pricked” runs until March 9, 2008. Museum of Arts & Design. 40 W. 53rd Street.

Sutherland’s Buck Shots

New York based filmmaker and photographer Peter Sutherland releases a new collection of 80 full-color photographs, his third publication with Brooklyn-based powerHouse Books.
Buck Shots is consistent with the photographer’s documentary style and eye for ordinary events, employing traditional documentary photography techniques to capture the hidden beauty of the silent exchanges between deer and humans. Shot from 2002-2007 in the West and Northeastern U.S and New Zealand, Sutherland becomes an expert at the deer chase, a hunter for his subject as they creep in and out of suburban towns. These photographs create an eerie and absurd alien world populated by the wild animal, both alive and dead.
Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Sutherland moved to New York in 1998 and premiered his first feature documentary in 2001’s South by Southwest. Buck Shots is a followup to his successful 2004 book Autograf: New York City’s Graffiti Writers. Sutherland has been involved with several films and publications and has exhibited widely in and surrounding New York, including in Melbourne, Tokyo, and Berlin.

Taking the Hood by Air

Defining a new elitist street sensibility, founder and creative director Shayne Oliver is taking his clothing brand, Hood by Air, into the future.
Oliver started out in early ‘06 by selling t-shirts at the aNYthing store. He later met Raul Lopez, now the brand’s design advisor, and created a small Spring ‘07 collection of split color tees given out to their closest friends.
Hood by Air is a unisex sportswear brand where modern day street silhouettes clash with high end detailing. The duo thrives to create clothes that “capture a street futurism filled with new ideas and takes on what the streets are really into. A vision that this street sensibility is actually an elitism opposed to the primary beliefs that ‘hood’ is a negative low class way of living.”
Their latest collection has expanded beyond t-shirts and now includes striped batwing sweatshirts, shiny quilted jackets, and pieced together tanks. The brand stresses individuality and evolution through casual classic pieces with modern twists, fashioned with an eye on the future.
Hood by Air has already won fans in Kanye West and Curtains, V.I.P. Be on the look out for their online store for diffusion line, Hood Classics, coming soon.
Available at Seven New York and Oak.

Cheryl Dunn’s Vocation

Manhattan-based photographer/filmmaker Cheryl Dunn is touring the city and hosting a book signing marking the release of her 80-image retrospective photography book.
Building on the photographer’s intimate and unpretentious style portrayed in her first book, 2005’s Bicycle Gangs of New York, Dunn’s new Some Kind of Vocation, chronicles her work from 1991-2007. Photos are representative of street life and capture individuals’ pursuits to transcend their struggles through personal expression and creative outlets. Included in the collection of documented artists and their subjects are Barry McGee, Margaret Killgallen, and Chris Johanson.
“There are pictures of boxers, protesters and graffiti artists in this book… these are all people who go to the streets to say something.”
Also included with the book is an hour-long orginal film by Dunn which follows 13 American artists on their art exhibit opening journeys to Tokyo.
Dunn has exhibited widely throughout New York with photography shows and and video installations. Read more about the artist: www.cheryldunn.net
‘Some Kind of Vocation’ book signing is on December 13, 6-8pm, at Giant Robot, 437 E. 9th Street (between 1st Ave. and Ave. A), New York, NY 10009
