Monumental Snowboard Collabos

click on image to view full collection
Monument Snowboards’ Art Director has been steering the company in a more creative direction for its past two seasons. While still maintaining a strong attention to functionality, Monument snowboards feature collaborative artwork with the fashion and art worlds.
Christopher Glancy guest Art Directed for the D.C.-based company 2 years ago when he curated a board for Monument with friend Daniel Jackson from art collective Surface to Air. Merging young street and fashion artists with snowboarding, Glancy was asked back last year to art direct the entire collection, bringing in established artists like J. Penry, Maya Hayuk, Peter Beste, and Donny Miller to create original works to be displayed on the boards. The collection was met with an amazing response at the SIA tradeshow in Las Vegas, establishing Monument (founded in 2001) as a true contender amongst giants like Burton, Rome, and Ride snowboard companies.
With designs ranging from graffiti-inspired to geometrics to cartoon-styles, Monument solidifies itself in uniqueness among independent snowboard companies and emphasizes itself as an individualistic brand while avoiding logo-heavy graphics.
Monument Snowboards are available at Wave Rave Snowboard Shop, Capital Boardroom and Board Paradise.

WK’s Trail

New York-based urban muralist and artist WK Interact has been papering the city with his trademark black-and-white street art since arriving from France 15 years ago. Fans will soon be able to see the world through his eyes at WK’s largest solo show in New York.
His images, often two-dimensional moving bodies, deliver social commentary and beauty in a raw, graffiti-like medium. WK’s shadowy and emotive characters range from soldiers to robbers to people screaming and jumping. Known for his New York street art, most notably his large scale mural above the parking lot at Prince and Lafayette, WK Interact has also done studio and commissioned art.
Epic mixed-media narrative “The Trail” finds its canvas in Williamsburg’s Espeis Archetype Gallery. Kinetic smaller works that snake around the walls inside will complement a 30-foot outdoor painting. “The Trail” also includes a custom bike and skateboard sculptures.
WK Interact has also gained popularity from collaborations with Obey, Dr. Martens, Nike, and others.
Opening Reception for WK’s “The Trail” is this Friday, November 30th. 7pm at Espeis Archetype Gallery, 90 Wythe Avenue (at North 11th), Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Works on exhibit November 30th 2007-January 13th 2008.

Laughing All the Way to the Banksy

A visionary and leader of a new artistic movement, the UK artist known as “Banksy” has become the anonymous poster boy for free speech. Bankrobber Gallery, London, in collaboration with Vanina Holasek Gallery, are pleased to present for the first time in New York, an exhibition of works by Banksy.
He is the most controversial graffiti artist in the world today. He’s considered an “art terrorist” and a “prankster” who has never posed for a photograph or even let the world know his real name. Banksy’s managed to smuggle pieces of his work into New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Brooklyn Museum, and American Museum of Natural History all in the same day, as well as the Louvre in Paris, the Tate Gallery in London, and The Natural History Museum in London.
He once stenciled the phrase “Mind the Crap” which appeared overnight on the steps to Tate Modern, he smuggled 500 altered jackets of the Paris Hilton CD into record stores, and placed a life-size replica of a Guantanamo Bay detainee in Disneyland.
Last year he reached tabloid status in the U.S. when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie purchased some of his pieces at his show in Los Angeles where animal rights activists were outraged by his pink painted elephant. Today, Banksy’s work is being compared to Warhol as the value of his art has skyrocketed faster than any substance on record. Come see his works in person for the first time in New York at: Banksy New York: “A Bankrobber Crime”….
December 2nd-29th, 2007. Opening Reception: Sunday, December 2nd. 1pm-5pm at Vanina Holasek Gallery. 502 West 27th Street NY, NY 10001

Bing Bang Theory

Bing Bang’s intricate contemporary shapes and tough imagery combined with the vintage feel of charms have been luring celebrities and major fashion magazines over the past couple of years.
New Mexico native Anna Sheffield, a New Yorker since 2002, is the force behind the simplicty-is-key jewelry collection. Sheffield studied blacksmithing, welding and fabrication to earn her BFA from San Francisco’s Academy of Art. She combines masculine elements like metal studs and bullets with whimsical touches including leaves, hearts and lockets to create interesting one of a kind pieces. Chains combine links of varying sizes and shapes in her all handmade collections.
Bing Bang has also expanded to the production of handbags, belts, and men’s accessories, all featuring the same attention to detailed hardware as seen in the jewelry. Fans include Mandy Moore, Cameron Diaz, Julianne Moore, and Uma Thurman and collaborations have already been produced with Marc Jacobs, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Lutz & Patmos; and in 2007 Sheffield received a nomination for the Swarovski Accessories Award.

You-N-I-T-Y

click flyer to view details
The new female art collective YOUNITY will open their first exhibit at the Showroom NYC tonight Friday, November 16, 2007 from 6pm-9pm.
YOUNITY was founded in New York City in 2007 by noted artists Alice Mizrachi, and Toofly. After spending years involved in the art world, they came to the realization that women artists do not have a properly-organized forum through which to disseminate their ideas to contemporaries and showcase their work to the public at large.
“The mission of YOUNITY is to create an international collective of female artists, designers, photographers and craftswomen. These participants will support each other by joining forces on projects, helping to build networks, providing resources, and creating community awareness with the help of young people. It serves as a bridge that results in artistic mentoring, communal support, and the production of collaborative art shows that promote women in the arts.”
“Crossover: Fusion of Female Stylez, Ideaz and Skillz” exhibit reflects the founders’ vision of bringing together a diverse population of women who reflect upon others’ life experiences as well as share their own. The event will feature work by painters, street artists, photographers, graphic designers, fashion designers, and craftswomen of all backgrounds. Featured artists include Lady Pink, Martha Cooper, Swoon, Toofly, Alice Mizrachi, Queen Andrea, Faith 47, Shiro, Amanda Lopez, Mama, M.I.S.S Crew amongst, Alexia Webster (South Africa), Claudia Gonzales(PR), Catfight Crew (Netherlands), Cece Carpio (NYC), Diana McClure (NYC), Diana Schmertz (NYC), and many more!
Opening reception is tonight from 6-9pm at the Showroom Gallery 117 2nd Avenue and will run until December 5. Available for viewing by appointment only. To schedule an appointment please contact: Alice Mizrachi or Toofly At: contactyounity@gmail.com
