Maine Stream Fashion

Nods to the local longshoremen are found in Rogues Gallery details. With plaids, ropes, and anchors, the designer pays tribute to the serene earthiness of the Maine coast.

A lifelong New Englander, Alex Carleton held positions at L.L. Bean, Ralph Lauren, Timberland, and Abercrombie before starting his own line, Rogues Gallery. Made of both natural and manmade materials, his men’s apparel and accessories are inspired by the outdoors. Pieces approximate the iconic tools and natural settings that surround the rogue- farmland, sails, wild animals- with designs that are weather-durable (and winter appropriate!) but meet the design sensibilities and color palette to satisfy the fashion consumer.

Rogues Gallery also includes a collection of accessories and jewelry. Recycled NASA-grade vinyl is constructed into deep tote bags using heavy twisted rope handles, also available in a leather version for a more streamlined look. Anchors, shark’s teeth, and squid tackles have been made into wearable charms and bracelets… but it’s spring’s boat boots that have got us going bananas! The hightop take on the classic leather deck shoe is as stylish and classic as it gets.

Rogues Gallery is available in New York at Barney’s, Odin, and Steven Alan.

The Sugarhead Show

Female-owned Sugarhead Quarters boutique in Manhattan’s Lower East Side has been staking their claim in the community since they opened in 2004. In celebration of their 3-year anniversary, SHQ will host a unique art exhibition bringing together their friends and contemporaries- artists, designers, boutiques and media.

Owned by sisters Carol and Phina Nakamoto, SHQ has established itself as both a neighborhood staple and shopping destination in the heart of the LES. The boutique stocks a selection of men’s and women’s streetwear, art, music, and accessories brands, some of which have been invited to participate in the shop’s anniversary art exhibit. Participants were each presented with a “blank” oil painted canvas depicting a Bob Ross style landscape and given the direction to take every liberty to make it their own, no boundaries.

The show will be displayed at the store beginning October 25th throughout the holiday season. The pieces contributed to the show by SHQ’s favorite artists will be sold with the opportunity to contribute a portion of sales to Grand Street Settlement (for the neighborhood’s “in-need residents”), SHQ will match all artists’ contributions.

Close to 60 participants from around the world have been assembled, many of whom will be in attendance for the opening including Kid Acne, Dscreet, Kid Robot, Santa Inoue, Alife Rivington Club, 10 Deep, Mishka, and many more. Montana Paint has provided the artists with paint and markers as well as contributed gifts.

Sugarhead Quarters’ 3 Year Anniversary Art Exhibit and Party will take place on Thursday October 25, 2007 at their 174 Rivington Street storefront. Click flyer for RSVP and more info.
