Happy Halloween! Costume?

I have such a love/hate relationship with Halloween. The skulls, the jack-o-lanterns, the candy, yes! The change of seasons? The costumes? Boo! I mean, “Booooo.” Really we love the costume aspect of Halloween, it’s just the struggle of finding the perfect one is so agonizing. And if you’re anything like me, you swear every year that you aren’t going out but wind up stressing at the last hour to throw together some pieces of your wardrobe that might be able pass as an 80’s girl, a Harajuku girl, or Nancy (as in Sid). Or, you do what i did last year and don’t even dress up, LAME!

Alas, we are here this year to save you! I have compiled some of the most relevant, creative and humorous costumes I could think of and even surprised myself. My fave has to be either Futura’s Pointman or Kaws’ Companion. The Merlin Bronques costume is pretty original too, just make sure you head to Happy Valley for the full effect, and don’t forget the camera!

Go ahead, bite my ideas! That’s what they’re there for…

And if you ARE looking for a party:
King Vashtie and Oscar are throwing a bash at their regular spot at Lotus or
the Frank151 boys and Harif “Haculla” are having their EZ LOVER issue release party at Plum with an open Vodka bar from 10-11pm.

Trick or treat! Smell my feet!

SUCKA PUNCH

Weighing in at 16 oz and $4 a pop, the latest energy drink to hit your local health food store is GT’s Raw, Organic Kombucha (pronounced kom-BOO-cha).
This ancient Chinese Tea is cultured for 30 days, has one billion organisms and pretty much sounds like a modern day fountain of youth in a bottle.

It’s already the miracle elixir of choice among the Hollywood it-crowd including Drew Barrymore and Andy Dick but for some reason we’re not surprised. Check the pic below of Kirsten Dunst in US Weekly.

Regardless, it was the label that got me to fork over my 4 bucks and give it a whirl. Rejuvenate! Restore! Revitalize! Not only does it claim to give you more energy, it promises to decrease your appetite, improve digestion, give you healthier skin and hair, and strengthen your immune system. It’s also low in calories, vegan and kosher. You’d have to be a sucker NOT to try it!

So I popped a bottle of Cosmic Cranberry. Poof! It fizzed and bubbled as a white cloud appeared and left leaving a stench similar to when you forget to take out your kitchen trash for too long. Not to mention the purple, slimy floaties swirling around. Anyhow, I knocked it back and was pleasantly surprised by the not-too-sweet, crisp and refreshing taste. Within minutes I felt a rush of energy and swear I saw my hair grow!

The verdict: If you’ve got an extra $4 to spend, buy a Kombucha.
Available at Whole Foods or your local health food grocer, sucka.

Limited Edition Magazine Launch

We love New York boys and their tough New York style. We especially love it when they’re the smart, trendsetting stylish ones. Leaders of our generation and the masterminds of cool that feed you what’s hot before you’ve even had the chance to finish devising your plan on how to cop what they featured in last month’s issue. This is exactly how we feel about the boys at LTD, the “taste makers” magazine.

These guys got a great thing going with their up-to-date freshness in a somewhat grassroots style. The first time I saw their magazine was in 2003 right at the peak of the sneaker craze when everyone was going berserk over limited editions and foreign colorways and there were a gazillion sneaker shops popping up in every borough of New York. (No, not really a gazillion.) LTD mag had it all covered.

The oversized format and interesting back-to-front read through are exactly a metaphor for how these guys think, truely on top of their game. Check them out at their issue launch party tonight at Noca Lounge (aka 323.) Maybe they’ll be giving away free issues and you can read up on more cool guys like Jeffstaple and Jakuan.

Eva this evening

Our site’s only been up for a few days now and this is the second mention of the hip, sexy Nolita boutique. We can’t help ourselves! Sister Mary Magdalene proclaims, “It’s the only place I’d buy something directly off the rack!” And in the retail-friendly city of New York there is definitely something to be said about that.

Eva carries all of our favorite brands; Imitation of Christ, Society for Rational Dress, Grey Ant, Acne. And the shop stocks the best accessories in the city, hands down! It’s also one the few stores we know to carry the Easy Spirit by Tara Subkoff collection that we lust for. Take a peek at one of my personal picks, the Hollis wedge. Dreamy…

Now if you’ve never made it in to check them out, tonight is your perfect opportunity. They’re hosting a trunk show for Vivienne Westwood’s line, Anglomania, and you’ll receive 15% off the new Fall merchandise.

Drinks and shopping are from 4-8pm and the afterparty starts at 10pm.

Check the flyer for more info. Maybe we’ll meet you there.

MADE HER THINK

From the instant I saw my girlfriend rockin’ these beautiful little golden birdies in her earlobes I had to have the whole story in detail. A woman named Meredith Khan was making her gorgeous jewelry mostly of 18k gold and sterling silver, and was selling it at one of my all time favorite boutiques, Eva. When I dropped in to further examine my new favorite jewelry line I was pleased to discover a romantic, whimsical collection with a bump of punk rock.

The silver pyramid studs that ages ago adorned my black overdyed jean jacket were now delicately crafted in a sophisticated gold earring version and the skull and feather combo necklace felt like my very own expression of self.
That was a year ago and my love for the brand still grows stronger.

See for yourself and shop here.

This is the G.E.C.

Maybe we speak for you too when we say that living in New York has got us jaded by a lot of the no-style-having slop we see scrawled across building facades and mailboxes to appreciate what we once were devout followers of, street art and graffiti. Yes, of course we still love and appreciate the art, those are our peoples, we just hadn’t seen much that had caught our eye recently until one of those above-mentioned mailboxes holla’d. Like, literally barked a “yo” at me from across the block! When I turned around to check who it was, I caught it’s gaze aimed right at my behind with those big-ass googly eyes.

Strategically placed, usually in duos these eyeballs grace the faces of so many inanimate street objects and have brought some of our favorite fictitious characters to life; Casper the Friendly Ghost, Hammerhead from Star Wars (below) and the loveable Cookie Monster (the brotha that hollered) to name a few.

The Googly Eye Cru (as stated in the iris) is popping up everywhere these days and from what we know is a crew of members littered across the country in Seattle, San Francisco, and of course, New York. Another thing we know: The members of the G.E.C. are predominantly female. Dope!

CHEAP MONDAY

And Tuesday, and Wednesday, and Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday!
Seriously, I’ve practically worn mine everyday since the day I purchased them. As most of you tapered jean fanatics know, this Swedish brand is cool and as self-proclaimed, cheap! $65 ($80 at Barney’s) is a no-brainer when stumbling across these in your favorite uber-cool, edgy, avant garde fashion retailers in the City.

Some of their most interesting styles from their A/W 2006 season include a super duper high waisted “Eiffel Tower” fit and a black and white stripe tight fit hinting to the key Balenciaga jeans from a couple seasons ago. And I almost forgot to mention the tight fit is unisex so you can steal them from your boyfriend if, uh, that’s his style. My fave happens to be the tight fit in black stonewash, I’m feelin’ that rock tip!

Check their site for their styles and story.
Available at Opening Ceremony, Odin, and Barney’s. Go buy a few!
