From the owners of Circa Now, the new boutique aims to serve the sophisticated fashion consumer but with a humorous approach. Sprinkled throughout its rotating selection of men’s and women’s designers are vintage pieces that seem to have inspired them. “The lines we offer each season will be chosen specifically because they compliment other featured designers, sort of like a ‘group show’”, states co-owner Nicole Tondre. “The vintage that hangs alongside the contemporary collections will be a reflection of what eras in fashion might have played as inspiration to the current designs on hand.” Kova&T, Sophomore, Grey Ant, Society for Rational Dress, Off Bowery, Bijules and Sophomore are some of the brands already carried.

Court’s wood interior is complemented with lacquer, antique furniture and built-ins with customized wallpaper by NYC artist Andrio Abero from Studio 33rpm. Expect warm, polished, cozy, and sexy surroundings in a welcoming atmosphere. In its coming seasons Court will launch its own house brand leather collection of hair accessories, driving gloves, handbags, jackets and shoes. Get On Knit!

Boessert Schorn started 2003, after Sonia Boessert and Brigitte Schorn finished their studying at Hochschule für Kunst und Design, Halle, Germany. They have since been developing heavily knit pieces in curious silhouettes for both men and women.

When developing their designs, handcrafted knitting techniques are always important. Using natural materials like cotton, wool, or rolled edge jersey, Boessert Schorn work with knit parts, ribbons, or strings which are made into creations such as necklaces and scarves, employing elaborate hand stitched patterned needlework for some of the more complex designs. Rough handmade embroidery creates a “patchwork” look and the traditional macrame technique takes on the look of valueable lace. One idea leads to another and their current collection inspires the next.

Although their knitting techniques are central in their work, it plays a secondary role to the Boessert Schorn style of wearable, everyday oversized shirts and sweaters (some unisex) which they wear-test themselves. Muted colors, crumpled materials, nonchalance, and contradiction are what you’ll find in any given season.

Gothic: Dark Glamour

We heard about this and thought, “How Worship Worthy!”

“Gothic” is an epithet that evokes images of death, destruction, and decay. Not simply a word that describes something, such as a Gothic cathedral, it is almost always a term of abuse that implies the dark, barbarous, and gloomy. Such negative connotations have made the gothic an ideal symbol of rebellion for a wide range of cultural outsiders. From its origins in 18th century gothic literature of terror to its contemporary manifestations in vampire literature and cinema, the gothic has embraced the powers of horror and the erotic macabre. Throughout its history, fashion has been central to our vision of the gothic. The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) will present Gothic: Dark Glamour, the first exhibition devoted to the gothic in fashion, from September 5, 2008 through February 21, 2009.

Set in theatrical mise-en-scene suggesting iconic gothic settings, such as the labyrinth, the ruined castle and the laboratory, more than 75 ensembles will be on display. Although popularly identified with black-clad teenagers and rock musicians, gothic fashion is represented in this exhibition with looks by designers such as Alexander McQueen, John Galliano of Christian Dior, Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh, Anne Demeulemeester, Anna Sui, Olivier Theyskens, Riccardo Tisci of Givenchy, Jun Takahashi of Undercover, and Yohji Yamamoto, as well as sub-cultural styles, such as “old-school goth,” cyber-goth, and the Japanese look of Elegant Gothic Lolitas.

“The dark glamour of the gothic has made it perversely attractive to many designers,” said Dr. Valerie Steele, director of The Museum at FIT and curator of this exhibition. “John Galliano told me that he saw the ‘Gothic girl’ as ‘edgy and cool, vampy and mysterious,’ while Rick Owens said that whenever he saw goth kids, he felt as though they were his children. But other designers, such as Olivier Theyskens and Ann Demeulemeester, reject the gothic label, although they acknowledge that their work may display a certain dark romanticism.”

An introductory gallery will focus on the origins of gothic style, which have inspired both designers and goths. The Victorian cult of mourning, for example, will be illustrated by actual mourning dresses, veils, and momento mori jewelry. The main gallery space will be designed as a labyrinth, featuring iconic themes such as Night, with black evening dresses; the Ruined Castle, with fashion inspired by gothic images of the Dark Ages, ruins, and fragments; and the Laboratory, where futuristic fashion “monsters” are created. Other themes include Veils and Masks, Mirrors, and the Haunted Palace – the last of which draws on Edgar Allan Poe’s architectural metaphor for a disturbed mind.

Making it ‘Works

Teamworks provides a platform for the newest, upcoming, and most under-represented artists, multi-media, concepts, and urban modernity that we have yet to know, with an apparel line supplemented with action videos. Born and raised in New York City, founder Neal Santos has been instrumental in giving flavor to New York’s street culture for decades. His ability to predict trends, often from behind the scenes, helps maintain an international influence consulting and collaborating with a host of prominent contemporary labels and street wear retail operations, most notably a long-time inspiration behind the world-renowned Supreme brand. You might know him from his recent project: OakleyxSupreme Frogskins.

Heavily influenced by Santos’ love of New York City, the latest Teamworks collection tells the story of gentrification. Teamworks collaborated with artist Alexander Dawson to create the “T” shirt collage of iconic NYC imagery representing remnants of the city’s historical surroundings. On a similar note, Santos culled inspiration from the stomping grounds frequented by him and his crew to create “The Key” t-shirt, calling out skate spots, drugs, parties, restaurants, street corners, and cars. “These are places to be, things to do”, states Santos. For another collaboration, Teamworks commissioned Sally Young of One Gun Press, to create the political “Heaven Help Us” t-shirt.

Drop Science


Structured pieces and curious proportions are what made us inquisitive about a fashion label that’s starting to head this way from down under.

Limedrop began as a love story between its creators and designers, Clea Garrick and Nathan Price. The pair met in their hometown in Australia’s Northern Territory where the young lovers became inseparable. The two vowed to never marry, but to remain truly in love. They ventured to Melbourne via Brisbane and Sydney, Clea gathered a degree in fashion design while Nathan studied marketing and kept a strong focus on innovation and sustainability. Then, in 2005, the design duo conceived their bold, playful men’s and women’s wear label.

The response to Limedrop’s collections has been overwhelmingly positive. The label has set a strong base in the Australian market while international buyers are eager to get the brand in their stores. Limedrop’s Spring/Summer 09 collection entitled ”Snakes and Ladders” is a bold, playful collection of men’s and women’s fashion and wooden jewellery aiming to take you on a voyage back to childhood games and family holidays. The pair focuses on clean silhouettes and a unique play on colour.

The Young and the Banging

“Once you start living downtown, it can begin to feel like a big kids high school. It’s like never never land, a place where one can stay young forever.” The taxis begin to feel like the school buses. The restaurants are like our cafeterias. The bars and clubs are like our school dances and the streets are like our high school hallways!

But if downtown NYC were really a high school, what would it look like and who would the school body be?

Inspired by both the traditional American high school yearbook and Ezra Petronio’s book “Bold and Beautiful” of Self Service, 15 girls were invited to partner as co-creators to make a downtown NYC yearbook through artistic collaboration. They were asked to highlight the young and creative people around them through Polaroid photography to act as their class photo and given spreads in the book to design in a way that best represented the lifestyle and creativity of those people. THE YOUNG AND THE BANGING provides a playful look into downtown NYC as if it were really a high school through elements that made those four years a unique, terrifying and memorable experience for all of us.”

Saturday, Sept 6th- Following the announcement in February to cease production of Polaroid instant film, conceptual photographer Lynnette Astaire’s New Orleans inspired performance comes highly anticipated at this years Deitch Art Parade. In it’s 4th year, the annually curated event, sponsored by Deitch Projects, Paper Magazine and Creative Time, marks the beginning of the fall art season in New York City. The event is held on West Broadway in the Soho neighborhood of New York City. Past and current performers include Yoko Ono, Kenny Scharf, Scissor Sisters, and Steve ‘ESPO’ Powers. Lynnette’s piece, entitled “The Polaroid Funeral” is a live adaptation of a self portrait session produced earlier this year. Classically trained in dance and music, this marks her debut in the art world as a performance artist. The Art Parade is Saturday September 6th 2008 at 4pm on West Broadway between Houston and Grand Streets in Manhattan.
