It’s a Rap!

Egotrip’s “The (white) Rapper Show” has been quite a phenomenon since debuting on VH1 a couple months ago. Now that it’s come down to the last two finalists I’ve been pretty heated by the thought of John Brown actually winning the prized $100,000. In the beginning he was annoying, then he became entertaining, and now I’m wondering how the heck he’s made it all the way to the final round and have my fingers crossed that Shamrock comes out on top! (Yikes.) Is anyone else annoyed by the amount of “Hallelujah, Holla Back!” paraphernalia popping up on all the myspace pages, clothing articles, and party flyers lately?

Are there really John Brown fans out there? Or do they just simply like the phrase? Is it because they find it humorous? Whatever the case, think about the message it’s sending.

When did it become cool to glorify the seemingly ignorant? What has happened to our society’s integrity? At what point does it become socially irresponsible for the television networks and producers of shows like TWRS to spotlight and glorify somewhat idiotic and inelaborate individuals such as the “King of the ‘Burbs”, possibly even creating new racial stereotypes? Viewers who are socially aware of the skewed reality that we witness on television can usually identify the ignorance and are more likely able to find humor in today’s never-ending list of reality show entertainment and can roll their eyes in disapproval. On the other hand, the message that is being sent and received by those unfortunately less aware and less educated on social issues (they’re all around us, folks) frequently miss the message altogether, unable to distinguish the difference between “right and wrong”. As we’ve witnessed, these lines become blurred and the very stereotypes that we try to break down can actually be perpetuated by the lack of knowledge of audience members who are unable to differentiate between entertainment and reality.

Have we come far enough along to be making light of what our previous generations of opressed and discriminated ancesters have worked so hard to overcome? Or are we prematurely putting a humorous spin on the issue? Then again, they are WHITE rappers, maybe somebody’s just trying to get even…

Check this recent Newsweek article to exercise your brain even more.

Dude, I love this show. Watching Jus Rhymes trying to bro down with N.O.R.E. is probably the most physically uncomfortable I’ve ever felt watching television.

John Brown is a complete dipshit, it shoulda been Persia and Shamrock at the end.

And remember to ‘hug a black or brown person. Often.

Calm down, it’s just a show. You actually WONDER why he made it to the finals. Are you so blinded by hate that you haven’t actually LISTENED TO HIS WORDPLAY? The dude has NEVER blanked on any challenges. He is so organized in his gameplan it is amazing.

You fall right into his trap to hate him… the dude is part PARODY… get it? He knows a dude from the burbs is going to get hated on for rapping, so he portrays these stereotypes to get under the skin of people who can’t laugh.

His gimmick got people to take notice of him… at the end of the year the rapper you will most likely remember is him. Marketing job… done!

Sure he may not be a sick backpacker who can spit conscious rhmyes all day… but dude has some nasty wordplay that is CONSTANTLY hated on by those who can’t get over themselves and their perceptions of what a rapper SHOULD BE.

and one more thing… the guy named himself after John Brown the abolitionist… who most people probably didn’t learn about in school unless they read “Lies My Teacher Told Me” or they had a teacher who thought outside the box. I don’t think an idiot (who many people think he is) would have the forsight to name themselves after him.
