Play by Sarah Reilly

Play by Sarah Reilly combines function and fashion for it’s debut yoga collection for Spring 09.
Designed by Sarah Reilly, the Spring/Summer 2009 collection is inspired by the desire to marry form and function in a layering system for an active lifestyle. Integrating clean lines, sustainable fabrics, and body conscious silhouettes, the pieces are as well suited for the yoga studio as they are for a weekend in the Hamptons. Print inspiration is taken from a vintage Navajo blanket and antique human anatomy prints . Color is inspired by a weathered industrial wasteland, muted and layered tone on tone. Silhouette is inspired by the beauty of the female form, and fabrics are languid soft and dreamy.
Designer Sarah Reilly grew up on the south fork of Long Island where she spent her childhood exploring the forests of the moraine and surfing the waves of the Atlantic. The daughter of an environmental advocate and a local craftsman, she developed an appreciation for the beauty of the natural world and at an early age. Upon graduating from Parsons School of Design in 2003, she went to design for Abercrombie & Fitch, J. Crew and Madewell. During a yoga teacher training at the Nosara Yoga Institute in Costa Rica, Sarah recognized the need for versatile, functional, and stylin’ pieces that could be worn in and out of the studio.
Today she feels blessed that work is PLAY.

Superfertile’s Hunger

Superfertile is back with another message fuelled jewellery collection challenging us to consider, at a time of soaring food prices, the battle facing the developing world to feed itself.
The new collection entitled ‘Hunger’ is a range of extremely elaborate pieces using beading techniques, but in the tradition of Superfertile, as always with a difference! Staple foods such as wheat, chickpeas, corn, rice, beans, lentils have been recreated in gold and silver to highlight the priceless nature of essential foods taken for granted everyday in many parts of the developed world. Beaded in unique shaped necklaces and bracelets. We created our pieces exhibiting the value of food and how much one can afford depending on their income, how much they can afford to buy and displaying their wealth and their food around their necks.
All beaded necklaces are named by their weight in grams and kilos depending on how much beads we use and the cost of each piece will be depending on the weight and the work/staple food used.
Creative Director, Kali Arulpragasam states “Everyone should have the right to eat and we are highlighting the massive hunger threat to many parts of the world. We have worked tirelessly to produce unique designs that have a three-dimensional sculpted quality to wow the public and get hunger to the forefront of people’s minds. The launch campaign will include striking visuals that highlight greed, need, wealth and health.”
This collection is also supporting Oxfam’s Global Food Crisis appeal, and some of the revenue will be donated to Oxfam to help tackle the food price disaster that is unfolding around the world.

Down by Kehinde Wiley

DOWN, an exhibition of seven heroically scaled paintings by Kehinde Wiley opens November 1, 2008 at Deitch Projects. 18 Wooster Street gallery between 6-9pm.
Initially inspired by Holbein’s painting “The Dead Christ in the Tomb”, as well as historical paintings and sculptures of fallen warriors and figures in the state of repose, Wiley has created an unsettling series of prone bodies, some a product of the ravages of war, some contorted into erotic revelry, while others embody the majesty and severity of entombed Saints.
Epic in nature, DOWN, is Wiley’s most ambitious series to date. These figurative paintings, which extend up to twenty-five feet in length, have grandeur and gravity seldom seen in contemporary art.
In DOWN, the poses are drawn from works of fallen characters by Holbein, Mantegna, Houdon, Maderno, Restout and Clesinger. Wiley re-conceptualizes classical pictorial forms to create a contemporary version of monumental portraiture. The works resound with violence, pain, and death, as well as sexual ecstasy. They portray a sense of heroism in the face of death, incorporating a scale that pushes beyond the mere corporeal and into the level of legend and hero worship.
Described by Wiley, DOWN is “an answer to the negative views of young Black men in American society. It recognizes an idiom that can be seen from a distance as a negative form transformed into something more fabulous and joyful. DOWN is a recognition of a type of artistic malaise that exists in current dialogue in art where joy is perceived as suspect and where absolute beauty is regarded with disdain. DOWN is at once an embrace of the visceral and the very physical embodiment of its denial.”
The subjects of the paintings are all African-American men in their late teens and twenties found in Brooklyn. Twin brothers, Dee and Ricky Jackson, who were portrayed as Lord Digby and Lord Russell in a previous series of paintings, chose the models for DOWN, allowing Wiley to expand his practice by having the models not only participate as subjects, but also in the exchange that goes with the casting, creating a self-directed system.
DOWN is Kehinde Wiley’s third solo exhibition at Deitch Projects. Wiley’s World Stage: Africa, Lagos-Dakar has been on view from July through October 26th at the Studio Museum in Harlem. The exhibition will travel to ArtPace in San Antonio in January.
