The 34th Annual Atlantic Antic Street Festival will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (rain or shine), transforming 10 blocks of Atlantic Avenue into a sea of live performances, one of a kind merchandise, and savory treats from around the world.

This homegrown festival will span from Hicks Street to Fourth Avenue, passing through Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, and Boerum Hill in the heart of brownstone Brooklyn, making the Atlantic Antic one of the biggest street fairs in the country. The Antic spans approximately 1 mile, giving festival goers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the diverse culinary offerings guilt-free. A special map will be provided to let visitors navigate the event by delicacy. After enjoying fare ranging from pulled pork and dumplings to baklava and fried chocolate, vistors can walk it off on your exploration of Atlantic Avenue.

Sahadi’s Specialty and Fine Foods will be celebrating its 60th year on the avenue at this year’s Atlantic Antic. Owner Charlie Sahadi has participated in 33 of the 34 Atlantic Antics and invites this years festival goers to “come taste the hummus that was voted one of the best in New York by Time Out NY Magazine”. And, stop by Chip Shop and try their specialty- the Deep-fried Twinkies!

Shop for jewelry, home accessories, and clothing- hundreds of local vendors will compliment the avenue’s wide array of trendy restaurants and shops. Anchored between Smith Street and Boerum Place, the children’s section will offer plenty of family fun with pony rides, face painting, balloon sculptures, puppets, books, kids clothing, and plenty of art activities.

The Antic will feature 10 live musical stages - featuring blues, rock, country, belly dancing, R&B, jazz, a Middle Eastern orchestra and interactive music for kids . The New York Transit Museum’s 15th Annual Bus Festival will once again join and intersect with this year’s Atlantic Antic. Running perpendicular along Boerum Place, visitors can board and explore a collection of vintage buses dating as far back as 1917, enjoy hands-on activities at the “Kid’s Stop” tent, and purchase unique gifts at the “Bus Shop.”

Closed to traffic for the day, the 2008 Atlantic Antic will showcase the rich cultural, culinary and commercial diversity along Atlantic Avenue. All activities are free and open to the public.

Ricky Powell, Lush Life, SugarHead Quarters (SHQ), Proof 7 and Red Bull invite you to join them as Powell unveils work that has until now been sealed away from the public eye in his West Village apartment. Appropriately entitled “Apt. A,” the exhibition will feature Powell’s most personal, iconic photography to date.

Ricky Powell is a preserver of one of contemporary society’s most important cultural moments: the proverbial Golden Age of hip-hop. Powell’s ascendancy into hip-hop occurred as the culture was in its rebellious youth, born from his impulsive backstage raid of Run DMC and the Beastie Boys’ Raising Hell tour in 1986. As fate would have it, the Beastie Boys would bring Powell along to photograph their 1987 License to Ill tour shortly thereafter. It was then that Powell was first exposed to the wild underground universe of hip-hop superstardom that he has continued to document with unparalleled candor and sarcasm on film.

Indeed, Powell’s Apt. A collection presents a rare opportunity to look into the lives of hip hop’s original luminaries before the culture was being taken seriously enough to merit coverage in mainstream media. Having shot everyone from Slick Rick to Eazy E at their most candid and simultaneously histrionic, Powell has gone on to publish several books of his photography, launch a TV program and partner with Lush Life’s Ryan Sikorski to further immortalize his work through a streetwear brand that reeks of New York authenticity. Though his work has since taken him around the world several times, Powell remains aesthetically rooted in the streets of New York, anchored firmly to the environment that introduced him as a photographer back in the 1980s.

The exhibition will be on display from October 7th- December 7th. All pieces are signed and available for purchase at SHQ. Gift bags at the event courtesy of Lush Life, Akomplice, Proof 7, The Beatards and others to be confirmed. Apt.A is coordinated by SHQ and is the launch of the Ricky Powell World Tour 2009. Dates are still being confirmed for Tokyo and London.

The opening reception is Tuesday, October 7th @ 7pm at SugarHead Quarters located at 174 Rivington St.
After-party 9pm-midnight at Beauty Bar- 231 E.14th Street. Music provided by DJ Elle and DJ IXL.

We’ve officially launched our debut Fall 2008 collection! This season our collection consists mainly of graphic tees, but Holiday brings our first cut and sew pieces that we guarantee you’ll love! Below is our official press release, make sure to let all your friends know!

Worship Worthy, the highly popular, street-level culture forecasting web portal, is launching “WW†”, a collection of street-inspired pieces geared towards their loyal audience of women with an appreciation of independent and avant-garde fashion. Available for the Fall 2008 retail season, the collection represents a natural return to founder Jennifer Wannarachue’s own design voice after years of focusing on forecasting and consulting. Creating this new offshoot of the Worship Worthy brand truly helps its audience grasp that the brand is not simply about editorial but the unique marriage of design and market awareness.

Consisting of t-shirts, sweatshirts, leggings and an outrageous, electrical tape-emblazoned dress, the premier, small run collection (entitled “Good and Evil”) employs empowered and bold graphics with a twist of sweet femininity to visually unite religious elements, an homage to Vivienne Westwood, sex positive lyrics, and the design roots of punk. Wannarachue specifically designed the dark, sexy collection with the intent to accentuate the tension between opposites: “…good and evil, sweet and salty, saint and sinner. It’s bold rebelliousness mixed with hints of traditional femininity”. Discharge and water-based print applications are utilized with the intent of preserving a soft and sexy feel to the collections graphics. The collection’s sophisticated-yet-playful color palette consists of black and white print combinations to resonate a feel of punk’s core roots, jewel tones paired with pastels, and a pop of neon yellow.

For its debut collection, WW† commissioned Amsterdam’s “calligrafitti” artist, Niels “Shoe” Meulman to create the gothic painted logo. “His calligraphy lettering is exactly what Worship Worthy is all about”, Wannarachue explains, “beautiful and organic but also dark, gothic and a little evil.”

The Worship Worthy Fall 2008 collection will be available at Reed Space and Bauhaus (HK), as well as online at Cultist Shop.

The SECTA hand bag collection by David Galan consists of an array of geometric shaped clutches and oversized shoulder bags intended for both day and night use. Soft patent leathers, treated dyed leathers, and slashed (Graffiato) lamb skins are combined with chunky chain shoulder straps and specialty hardware. Bright reds, deep purples, white, and metallic leathers complete the look of each hand crafted piece.

Galan’s collaboration with SECTA was a perfect fit for the two brands. “David and I have a similar aesthetic,” states Renee Patron, Secta designer/creative director, “we both like clean lines, sharp colors, modern shapes and experimental concepts that are classic and timeless. It was a perfect fit.”

David Galan, an architecture student-turned hand bag designer, began his career at Barney’s New York where he discovered an appreciation for the modernistic approach to design. He went on to join Gucci which evoked in him an insatiable desire to design, and in 2004 Galan launched his own collection of handbags. Galan’s bags are a favorite of celebrities and can currently be found in select Nordstrom stores, Bettina Duncan at Fred Segal (Santa Monica) and other specialty boutiques around the US.

Sydney Rose Davies and Gigi Ashley Munns agree that clothes should be refined and humorous at the same time. In a world of politically correct disposable fashion, RosenMunns continues to make waves season after season.

The Spring/Summer 2009 collection is the designers’ first full collection which combines original prints with streamlined separates. “Clothes are a one-way conversation with the world”, states co-designer Munns. This season’s conversation is about bold-yet-delicate prints and strong shapes on soft cottons and Lycra. A restricted palate of grays balances the surf-inspired prints. Gradually tapered pant legs, sleeves, and skirts echo the triangular shapes in the fabric’s artwork (hence the names Triangle Pant, Triangle Top), with each of the separates created to mix and match to your mood.

For Rose and Munns, who founded their brand in 2007, getting dressed is also a means of survival - A way to control what you can. Pieces from the collection reflect an animal’s gift of blending into their environment to survive. “The tank and skirt are both light on the front like a shark’s belly”, states Rose, “and the back is darker like a shark’s back. Clothing is not meant to be safe, and this collection does not rely on a safety net.”

Rose and Munns’ plan is to stay afloat in the cut-through fashion world.

Inspired by the interaction of nature and urban life, fashion designer Nami, launches “Plants & Rags”, her Spring/Summer 09 collection of feminine yet unconventional apparel.

Weeds breaking through the sidewalks and overtaking abandoned parking lots and construction sites, and ivies covering the walls of old factory buildings are the natural occurrences that are reflected in the pattern making, color palette and screen prints. “It’s about the contrasts of hard and soft, raw and refined, manmade and organic”, explains Nami. “Each piece is wearable and timeless, with attention paid to special details and finishes.”

Only the highest quality Japanese cottons and cotton blends are used, in combination with flowy, soft silk charmeuse and silver-coated voiles. The collection attempts a fresh approach to silhouette and materials, focusing on innovative patternmaking while keeping an emphasis on simplicity and functionality.

A native of New York, Nami received her BFA in Apparel Design from the Rhode Island School of Design. She spent twelve years working for various design houses such as Geoffrey Beene, J. Crew, Moschino in Milan, and Puma in Germany before venturing out on her own brand as a means of exploring her personal process through story, form, and construction.

Catering to the fun, smart, bold downtown girl and her male counterpart comes contemporary fashion boutique, Court.

From the owners of Circa Now, the new boutique aims to serve the sophisticated fashion consumer but with a humorous approach. Sprinkled throughout its rotating selection of men’s and women’s designers are vintage pieces that seem to have inspired them. “The lines we offer each season will be chosen specifically because they compliment other featured designers, sort of like a ‘group show’”, states co-owner Nicole Tondre. “The vintage that hangs alongside the contemporary collections will be a reflection of what eras in fashion might have played as inspiration to the current designs on hand.” Kova&T, Sophomore, Grey Ant, Society for Rational Dress, Off Bowery, Bijules and Sophomore are some of the brands already carried.

Court’s wood interior is complemented with lacquer, antique furniture and built-ins with customized wallpaper by NYC artist Andrio Abero from Studio 33rpm. Expect warm, polished, cozy, and sexy surroundings in a welcoming atmosphere. In its coming seasons Court will launch its own house brand leather collection of hair accessories, driving gloves, handbags, jackets and shoes. Also expect an expansion online at Courtshop.com coming soon!

Court is located at 178 Mulberry St. NY, NY 10012. 212-925-1022
Boessert Schorn started 2003, after Sonia Boessert and Brigitte Schorn finished their studying at Hochschule für Kunst und Design, Halle, Germany. They have since been developing heavily knit pieces in curious silhouettes for both men and women.

When developing their designs, handcrafted knitting techniques are always important. Using natural materials like cotton, wool, or rolled edge jersey, Boessert Schorn work with knit parts, ribbons, or strings which are made into creations such as necklaces and scarves, employing elaborate hand stitched patterned needlework for some of the more complex designs. Rough handmade embroidery creates a “patchwork” look and the traditional macrame technique takes on the look of valueable lace. One idea leads to another and their current collection inspires the next.

Although their knitting techniques are central in their work, it plays a secondary role to the Boessert Schorn style of wearable, everyday oversized shirts and sweaters (some unisex) which they wear-test themselves. Muted colors, crumpled materials, nonchalance, and contradiction are what you’ll find in any given season.
