Tuesday, March 23 : The Shape of Things to Come

Shape Shiftr is a new label we are loving. Based out of our own Williamsburg, they are made up of “2 Triangles” Meghan Lavery and J’aime Lizotte. Their first pieces sold out right away at Pixie Market. Luckily, they refreshed with their new Fall line which is a cerebral blend of pretty neutrals, offbeat mix of silk, leather, and velvet in wearable basic styles that’s just about 15 degrees off. Just right.
For more info, visit their website. Their blog is lovely too.

Saturday, March 13 : Mark Fast

Mark Fast has been one of my favorite newer designers for the past couple of seasons. Having just graduated Central Saint Martins in 2008, the Canadian-born knitwear designer has been a rising star in London. Unbeknownstly but cleverly so, he stirred up a bit of controversy when he decided to use plus-sized models in his S/S 2010 runway show.
I was further impressed by him when he declined to lend clothes to Lady Gaga, his soft-spoken voice stating:
“My work is about a lifestyle. It’s not fast-food fashion. It’s not about trends, it’s about classic, it’s about the body, it’s about beauty. Maybe that gets lost in the picture with certain celebrities.”
With no disrespect to the Fame Monster, his clothes truly deserve to shine for themselves.

Mark Fast’s new affordable line “Faster” is available at Curve
And joining in with the rest of my favorite London-based deisgners, he is the latest one to design his first ever Topshop collection, which comes out in April/May. Can’t wait!

Tuesday, March 2 : A Hairy Hunch

There’s been more play with layering and weaving together of fabrics as opposed to the normal cut-and-sew for the past couple of seasons, as seen at Gucci and Herve Leger. Most prominent with the basket-weaving details for the Fall/Winter 2010 collections are present in ThreeAsFour and VPL, in which it takes on a delightfully strange and hairy twist…
It deeply brought to mind one of our favorites, Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir a.k.a. Shoplifter. The Icelandic artist and fashion designer is best known for her intricate and eerie hair sculptures (i.e. Bjork’s Medulla’s album cover).

Friday, February 19 : Katie Gallagher F/W 2010
I remember spotting Katie Gallagher on the streets a year ago and wondering who this fairy-like creature waif was. She turned out to be a designer, of course. RISD-bred and with apprenticeships at Anna Sui and ThreeAsFour under her belt, she has a very clear and amazing vision, one that is very ethereal and dark, and takes place in the forest where you’re surrounded by a pleasant mix of cute and creepy woodland furry animal friends.
Her show titled “The Heart of The Woods And What I Found There” took place at the Soho Grand February 15, 2010 where she presented her “mini-me’s.”

Monday, February 1 : The Resurrection

WW† is back in 2010 and Jesus has been walking…
The rebirth has been imminent within the movies (Antichrist, Angels & Demons), jewelry, and most recently the Paris Men’s Fashion Week.
To be particular, Jesus walked the runways at Blaak and Givenchy. Blaak’s “Exodus” show opened up with an ominous feel with a rather large crucifix and with the adornment of crowns of thorn. The Givenchy “Jesus is Lord” tee-shirt is sure to be the new Christopher Kane’s Gorilla tee or its Topshop’s variant in Crocodile tee version. Both shows, by the way, complete their look with patent-leather Jesus sandals.
Amen.

Thursday, August 6 : Brand Watch: Priestess NYC

Blessing us with fashion that draws from goth, glam, bold, raw elements and translates into a more sophisticated look is Priestess NYC. Well designed, constructed, and fitted, Priestess NYC is the happy ideal for those of us in search of a look that’s charismatic without being overly dramatic…
Designer Cody Ross characterizes his label’s aesthetic as a blend of “transgression, kitsch and street-style.” Part ‘80s revival, part futurism with a smattering of goth-glam, Priestess NYC incorporates urban-girl cool with a contemporary take on vintage punk. Richly textured and in a range of kinetic colors and prints, the looks embody an off-beat sophistication and are polished, nuanced and highly directional. Luckily for his male fans, the designer offers some unisex pieces as well.
A-listers and pop-icons Bjork, M.I.A., Natalie Portman, and Katy Perry have already been spotted wearing the label which is available in progressive boutiques around the world. Prices range from $100-$650.
